ออบซิเดียน เป็นผลึกหินแก้วที่เกิดจากลาวาจากภูเขาไฟที่ระเบิดและเย็นตัวลงอย่างรวดเร็ว ทำให้เกิดการตกผลึก และกลายเป็นหินแก้วที่แข็งแกร่ง ผลึกแก้วนี้โดยมากจะพบในลักษณะสีดำ แต่ก็ยังสามารถถูกพบได้ในสีต่างๆ เช่น สีน้ำตาล สีทองเงา สีเงิน สีเขียว สีฟ้า สีม่วง ฯลฯ ซึ่งออบซิเดียนที่มีสีรุ้ง คือสีม่วง สีเขียว และสีทองเงา จะค่อนข้างหาได้ยาก และมีราคาสูงกว่าสีดำ หรือสีน้ำตาล
